Established in 2019, Baltishorts has become a staple in the MdFF program, highlighting movies made by DMV creators or films about the greater Baltimore community. This year's program features docs, narratives, experimental work and animation spotlighting quintessential Mid-Atlantic stories and sensibilities. (Eric Cotten)

Back to Where We Were // In the Presence of Our Ancestors is a narrative short film directed by Sharayna Christmas that invites us to reflect on the continuity of our past, present, and future. The film weaves ancestral presence, the healing power of water, and the regenerative force of land into a tapestry of guidance and transcendence. Set against the evocative backdrop of St. Helena Island, a sacred Gullah site, the work channels movement inspired by the ancestors of Igbo Landing, accompanied by the resonant music of Georgia Anne Muldrow.

The folklore of Igbo Landing serves as the film's cornerstone, grounding its themes of resistance, memory, and spiritual liberation. The water becomes both a witness and a collaborator, carrying their spirit into the present. The fertile landscapes of the Gullah coast, the film creates a realm where ancestral beings move among us, guiding us to reclaim a wholeness fractured by time. It asks: How do we honor their resistance? How do we carry their courage forward? When we honor our ancestors we honor ourselves.

what it felt like follows a year of fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum across four intimate trimesters. Discovered just days before Roe v. Wade was overturned, the pregnancy becomes high risk demanding raw decisions amid political upheaval. The film emerges as both personal testimony and collective meditation on reproductive justice, the body’s capacity to hold and release trauma, and the power of speaking aloud the stories we too often keep in silence.
