Attending the Festival
First time at a film festival? What’s it like?
If you love movies, you’ll feel right at home. You’ll still sit in a dark theater, silence your phone, darken your screen, and get lost in a great story — but a film festival is so much more than just watching a film.
At the Maryland Film Festival, you’ll discover new voices and genres you won’t find anywhere else, connect with filmmakers and fellow film lovers, and experience stories that reflect the world around you in unexpected ways.
We organize the lineup into Festival Journeys — themed pathways that help you explore what interests you most, whether that’s Black Voices, She/They Said, Pride, WTF, or one of our other curated routes through independent cinema. Not every film is part of a Journey — they’re simply starting points to help you dive in, connect themes, and make your own path through the festival.
An exciting part of MdFF is that most screenings include a live Q&A with the filmmakers, giving you a rare chance to hear directly from the artists about their creative process, inspirations, and behind-the-scenes stories.
You’ll also find CineTech, our section dedicated to emerging technologies and interactive storytelling; student films showcasing the next generation of talent; panels led by industry professionals; and lively after-parties where the conversation continues off-screen.
So yes — it’s like going to the movies, but elevated, intentional, and community-driven — a full-weekend experience that celebrates the art and craft of film in every dimension.
Will my ticket guarantee a seat?
Yes — a ticket secures your admission. That said:
- Please arrive 15 minutes before show-time to check in, find your seat, and get settled.
- For very high-demand screenings (Opening, Closing, special events), arriving early is strongly recommended.
- If you show up very late (10-minutes past start time) there’s a possibility you might be directed to standby seating or no entry if fully booked.
What if the event is sold out online?
If you see “Sold Out” on a screening you still may have hope: we run a standby line at the theatre. Arrive ahead of showtime, check with the box office, and if there are any unclaimed seats a few minutes before the screening begins, they’ll be released to standby attendees.
Do I need to print my ticket?
No — your ticket on your smartphone is fine. If you prefer a printed version as a backup, that’s OK too.
Refunds or exchanges?
Once the screening has begun, tickets are non‐refundable. If you’re running late (especially past 10 minutes into the show), you risk forfeiting your seat. We strongly encourage arriving early to avoid missing out.
