STUDENT FILM PROGRAM
Student filmmaker showcases, our Student Film Summit, a special program for middle school students, and hands-on ways for young filmmakers and educators to participate in MdFF. Interested in learning more?
MdFF’s student film programming spotlights emerging voices through dedicated student showcase screenings and opportunities to connect with filmmakers and peers. It also includes the Student Film Summit, a Friday-morning gathering at the Parkway featuring workshops, equipment demos, filmmaker Q&As, and informal networking for young filmmakers from across the Mid-Atlantic.
There are a few different ways to participate as a partnered educator:
- Build the festival into your class time and bring your students to see films at the festival! Student film showcase programs are featured on April 8. Other student work is included in programs throughout the Festival.
- Bring students to our free Student Films for Students shorts program on Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30pm
- Have your students participate in the Student Film Summit on Friday, April 10 from 9am-noon.
- Bring your students to experience CineTech, our showcase of cinematic emerging media, like narrative video games, virtual reality and interactive film.
- Collaborate with us on planning the events for the Summit (contact Aishat@snfparkway.org).
- If you are a middle school teacher, administrator or parents, get in touch with us about bringing students to the Middle School Program on Wednesday, April 8. (contact Aishat@snfparkway.org)
- Invite your students to submit their films to MdFF 2027 when the call for submissions goes live in July.
- Spread the word! We would love to expand our reach to folks with whom we might not already be in touch.
Student Filmmaker Summit
The Summit is an opportunity for young filmmakers from middle school through graduate programs across the Mid-Atlantic to come together, get to know each other, share information and participate in MdFF. The Summit will consist of filmmaking workshops, ask-me-anything sessions with visiting filmmakers, equipment demonstrations, meet-ups, tabling and unstructured time for informal networking.
Middle School Program
The Maryland Film Festival’s 3rd annual Middle School Program takes place from 9-11:30am on Wednesday, April 8. This special program is intended to provide 6-8th graders in Baltimore City Public schools with the opportunity to attend a film festival screening in the historic Parkway Theatre (5 W. North Ave). Media literacy preparation and follow-up for educators and their students is included in the program. A program of short films will be followed by a conversation between students, MdFF programmers and visiting filmmakers. This program is open to Baltimore City Public School middle school classes.
