Upgrading the Parkway for the Next Decade

In early 2026, the Parkway will begin long-planned renovations to Theater 1, made possible through major support from Johns Hopkins University and the France-Merrick Foundation. These upgrades include:
- A new retractable screen that lifts fully to reveal the stage
- A significantly upgraded sound system designed to support both film and live performance
- Infrastructure enhancements improving accessibility, flexibility, and the audience experience
What This Unlocks
These renovations will unlock full use of the historic stage in Theater 1, allowing the Parkway to greatly expand its live arts offerings, including:
- Music performances
- Dance and movement-based works
- Small theater productions
- Hybrid and multimedia performances
- Artist residencies funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation
They also enhance the technical quality of all screenings and public events, supporting new collaborations in emerging media and performance.
Programming Continues During Construction
Theater 1 will be temporarily offline, but Theaters 2 & 3 and the Parkway Lounge will remain fully operational, ensuring that year-round programming—including screenings, community events, and filmmaker meetups—continues without interruption.
